We are Al & Myra Ireland and this is our home, built by us - every bit is our doing. We bought this barren rocky acre in 1970 and built the house over a number of years. We hauled in tons of topsoil and composted everything, including the few deciduous willow trees that were on the property, to make soil. We planted many trees, shrubs and bushes, wild and native plants and cultivated some garden plots. We've also added a few special features like our hand-built patio and pond rock steps.
Our daughter Laurette (Lo) is the driving force for River and Rose B&B - her idea, her talented hand to begin the process, and her children to give it a name. River and Rose are the second names of our wonderful grandkids and very appropriate to the land itself!
Now it is a pleasure to share our abode with guests. Welcome to River and Rose B&B!
Seen here is the outdoors view of your suite. The double bank of windows are the upper and lower/entry level rooms. The deck is above the walkway arches and the lovely chaise lounges can be seen ~ waiting for a guest to enjoy a great sunbathing siesta. Above in the upper bank of garden view windows is the charming Juliette balcony.
Foreground, from the patio edge, is the bridge over the gently flowing creek flanked by a fabulous scented Azalea and a brilliantly flowered Quince bush. The entire corner wall of the B&B suite is decorated by our beautiful lilac Rhodo.
Tall trees overhead and snuggled into the river's valley R&R has it's own unique habitat. The creek flows from the North East/ Fern Crescent side down past the house into the pond and then across the property below our windows. With nature's protection our home area has moderated temperatures, cooler in summer's heat and warmer in winter's frost. The plants are happy to grow here in the fertile ground created for them. .
or lounging spot for our guests, enjoyment. This deck is accessed from the upper floor, bedroom level of the suite. Often our guests, during lovely weather will take their breakfast up here. A sumptuous repast while engaged in this natural setting is delicious to all senses.
This exquisite old world rose has magnificent scent and is spectacularly showy. It pops open great clusters of flowers just as old ones fade and stays lovely to see all warm season. It has found a simbiosis with the neighboring Quince bush and benifits greatly from the protection of the prickly thorns. Deer will clean off the buds and blossoms from other shrubs and Rose Bushes but won't generally attempt these.
This large birdhouse has been home to a tiny wren who loves to be nestled into the enveloping branches of the Fushia and Rugosa Rose bushes.
One of the beautiful trilliums found wild in our local woodlands. This flower has closed his face for the evening as they do but his leaves are easily recognizable. These flowers are to be enjoyed, photographed but never picked.
This eagle was created by friends for our garden from West Coast Vancouver Island driftwood. He sits majestically among our garden plants reminding us of his life version who often perch high above on out tree tops.
This comfy area of the property is nestled into the Maple Trees ~ both Big Leaf and Vine Maple The swing looks in on the pond close enough to hear the burbling waterfall created by the creek dropping inches into the pond. Gardens surround and my favorite Maiden Hair Fern loves this area of the grounds...it spreads wider and fuller each year. Relaxing place to sit and contemplate.
Standing at the R&R balcony rail one can lookinto the creek bottom. Often a view to see wildlife, this shot shows the fall colors, falling leaves and cooler temperatures arriving here. The creek flows away from us into the pond beyond and past the patio seen in the picture - mid-view. Sitting on the balcony guests can hear the trickling waters below and often times watching birds in their busy world...eagles, heron, Mallard & Wood ducks, geese, and dozens of smaller birds.
although not seen often and never for any great length of time these bears live in the surrounding forests but share the areas with us locals quite generously. These lumbering giants are awesome to seen but not keen to be seen, we most often see only their paw prints.
Through the evergreen trees and flowering shrubery will eventually lead you to the river's edge and open bright skies. The shaded, wooded area is filled with the sounds of nature...peaceful. Swingset, garden swing and chair groupings are places throughout for enjoyment.
We have a lovely year round pond, home to fish, frogs, muscrat, dragonflies, ducks, heron and at least once, a Beaver. The creek is a lovely clear, trickling waterway through the property near to the house. It borders a lovely patio we share with our guests.
Wild roses! We strive to maintain and increase the Rose ~ the scent and appearance of nature's beauty. We love roses and the scent of wild roses are my favorite. Our B&B was named for these beauties and our grand- daughter, whose second name is Rose. We have a great number of wild rose volunteers ~ we tame a little or at least control the extent of their territories, and these were the models for our hand crafted design and logo.
Overlooking the trees on the beach looking south the rising sun highlights the beautiful mtreetops and clouds with a dramatic effect.
Alouette river gurgles over the back of this property, giving a lovely sound and freshness to the area. Sitting in the comfy chairs beneath the tall alder trees with their leaves rustling in the breeze one feels the hustle and bustle of the world melt away. Absolute rejuvenation.
Deer are a common local gift. We see them often here...this baby is comfortable enough to be right next to the suite windows and enjoyng a snack of Azalea buds and Calla Lilly petals.
Entry to the R&R suite via the covered walkway to the main door and the suite's balcony above. Photographed from the gardens and patio below.
This photo is in the Spring when growth is just beginning and the Calla Lillies are at their greatest display. By summers peak the roses are hiding the barrel planter seen here.
Sitting on the swing view of the home. Fragrant sweet stalks and delightful "hot passion pink" Rhodos in the foreground.
Lovingly built into the side of our lovely little pond these stairs provide a perfect perch for visitors (and our grandkids) to watch nature at work in the creek environment. Frogs and egg clusters, water striders, and all sorts of life abounds.
This path eventually leads you back to the patio over the little creek bridge to the house. Shrubs, trees, gardens and natural flora abound. The tall trees in the foreground are mostly all evergreens while the ones sheltering the house are mainly B.C.'s Big Leaf Maples. Seating is generously placed about the property encouraging guests to linger...enjoy.
Our lovely little pond next to the patio with BC Serpentine and Slate steps and gardens all about is a facinating section of our little creek. With the crown of Red Maple cascading over one side, a huge spreading Hosta, lovely Calla Lillies, Iris, astilbe and so many other happy plants.
This little one was following Al's feet about as he walked near the driveway. Al put his hand down and on he jumped. He sat and enjoyed the comfort of his warm hand for a short time holding some tasty morsel in his beak them without any notice just flew away.
The fall garden is decorated with Jack o'Lanterns made specially for us with bows on their heads and not too scarry! R&R will do a halloween theme for guests in their rooms if requested.
Seating areas and meeting spaces scattered all about the grounds for individual enjoyment or group gatherings. This seating group is directly above the patio in the shade of the evergreen trees and next to the fabulously scented Cherry and Lilac trees. Myra also offers picnic blankets and pillows to take to your favorite little spot, commune with nature, read a book, watch the clouds scuttle by...enjoy!
Above the arched walkway is the guests deck with adjustable cedar chaise lounges and a little dining table and chair set for outdoor dining opportunities.
The deck commands a full view over the backyard gardens, patio, pond and creek to the river flowing over the back of the space.
Wild Violets pepper our grounds in the Spring ~ a natural to this area they add beautiful bright purple patches to the landscape!
Hear the roar! Our little waterfall falls through the trunks of two huge Big Leaf Maple Trunks crossed over the creek bed. The flow is varient depending on rainfall and the good grace of our neighbors. Once a constant roaring concern this waterfall will these days cease to flow mid summer. A lovely sight to behold.
Clear stream water gently flows next to the lovely Heather blossoms and new grass.
A mid-day visit by mom and her gang ~ curiosity and bright eyes. They sniffed over the area then off to the river bank.
These deer, a momma and two fawns enjoyed a little stroll along the river's edge and eventually wandered easily across the river.
Once a small shrub this Rose Of Sharon bush is now commanding the entire space at the corner of the entry walkway. With it's huge, fushia pink blooms and cascading shape it makes a charming first view down the walk.
This oddly shaped large mushroom appeared seemingly overnight and just as quickly became a "family group"
Spring is the season of new beginnings and one we welcome in our gardens, here. The Lilac color magnolia, the showy Cherry Blossoms, the white fabulously scented lilacs, the new bright growth on the red maples... LOVE IT!
Nestled into the flora und under the canopy of blossoms guests can put heir feet up and enjoy.
Given to us by fabulous friends and beautiful enough to adorn a commanding area Beautiful Peace is spectacular.
A couple comfy swivel, rocking chairs allow guests to enjoy the babble of the creek, the shade of the beautiful Vine and Big Leaf Maples, the gentle breeze through the canopy of branches...relax, peace out.
Bordered by gardens, stairs to the beach path and the rippling creek our patio is a happening place. Our guests, family, friends gather to socialize and enjoy, BBQ a little and delight in the ambiance.
Children and the young at heart enjoy the sturdy swing set ~ in the back left of picture.
Sit, contemplate, rejuvenate, relax!
This is the River of our name ~ our grandson and the Alouette River flowing by in this photo. We are fortunate to have the Alouette River flow over our property and leave us a nice sandy shore to enjoy. The river is a fabulous place to relax, collect one's thoughts, drift off to oblivion for a while. Fish and fry circle at your feet, Eagles, heron, Mallards, Wood Ducks, Mergansers, gulls circle above... As one guest put it...connect with yourself and nature ~ land and river.
Our little creek falls into the still pond while outlined with a white winter blanket.
The B&B and home can be seen. All warm and bright inside decked in beautiful, bold white outside!
This bench still owns a beautiful RIVER vista viewing spot but who wouild want to disturb the fabulous decorating job it has!
This favorite summer spot has a whole different feel in the Icey face of Winter 2017. Overlooking the pond and pond garden it commands a lovely spot more suited to warmer weather for physical enjoyment.
A rare sight for us...snow covering everywhere and ice! Our winter's are generally a skiff of snow, maybe and above zero Celcius. The garden scape created is beautiful.
Beautiful big clusters of frozen ICE and snow cover the shapely ornamental this winter...this summer it will have as many clusters of huge showy white blossoms.
Everything, everywhere is snowy white! So pretty!
Parked just of Fern Crescent pavement she is looking into the upper portion of River and Rose grounds no doubt checking out the Rose bud availability. She and many of her brethren come to visit regularly and thrill us every time.
Looking directly into our paved driveway as it slopes down to the house. Shrubs flower along the frontage and shaped evergreen side the drive while lovely decorative red maples shade one side and garden plants adorn the other. The drive is lighted in the evening and reflectors show the way down.
Our climate and beauty is enhanced by the beautiful giant greenery. Nestled by the trees and in the river valley we have a setting all our own. The suite is facing a southern exposure and remains a bright enviting window scape all year round. the large deck, visible on the right above the arched wallway is the guest's private sun drenched space. The banks of windows and the Juliette balcony, center of the house, shows the exterior of the guest suite.
This fellow spent a great part of the day on this tree top leaving briefly and returning. He would make a very melodious whistle call, we'd here another further down river reply. So intriguing to observe.
Our resident Eagle, made from driftwood of Western Vancouver Island and perched on a garden corner looks down on another resident heron.
This comfy seating area is beneath the flowering Cherry tree and next to the climbing rose. Although nesled into the shrubery it is not too far from the patio and within the line of sight for the suite.
Sitting beside the flowing water is such a lovely place to be, connect with nature, sort my thoughts, enjoy the peaceful tranquility.
We know our guests enjoy this as well.
I love this flowering shrub and visitors comment how lovely it is.
BEAUTFUL, sparkling Christmas lights dominate the backyard evening scenery. From falling stars high in the tree tops to a faintly glowing light trail in the snow the scene is spectacular. Our Christmas guest this year said "I keep the southern side blinds all open, so we can go to sleep watching the lights!"
This photo displays the peaceful, rejuvenating naturalness of the river beach area. Sights, sounds, smells all instigate a feeling of contentment. Our guests, in the know say...ZEN!
Home to frogs, fish and many natural critters is just off the patio and a constant source of interest. The creek falls into the pond from the upper property flow and creates a lovely sound, the plants surrounding it are immensely happy to be there and flourish.
The number of croaking, chirping frogs tell us our creek and habitat is healthy one. These private little creatures hide in out of the way sheltered sunny spots throughout the property and only if you're lucky and watching closely will you see them, however they will sing a happy little tune often.
Seating at the patio can incorporate family and friends to gather and visit when you stay here. The area is private to our home and spacious enough to allow comfortable social life.
Standing at the entrance to your B&B suite...our giant lilac colored Rhodo warmly greats you in early Spring. Beyond lies the various gardens, shrubs, Patio and BBQ, pond and creek the copse of tall evergreens and the Alouette River.
Time and cares seem to just drift away as you sit watch the water and river life entrance you. The calm and peacefulness of this spot is the subject of many visitors comments. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy this lovely space...play in the water, move a chair and sit in the water, float on tubes/ rafts, float on the rapids, skip stones...
Standing knee-deep in the river near the back of the property to view the R&R home. Looking back over the beach and gardens, through the trees, one can see our home which sits about 33 meters in from the street. The cool, clear water flows from a dam on Alouette Lake above us, on the mountain. The bench in the foreground left is a favorite relaxing point for our guests.
R&R gardens and amenities are available for guest's enjoyment. Guests are encouraged to enjoy all the nature the property offers. From the river across the far reaches of the acreage, the multitude of gardens, shrubery and enhancments, the hand-built patio and BBQ, the 100 foot tall trees and the multitude of colorfull blossoms, to the numerous wildlife who visit our space, R&R has something for everyone. With seating situated around the grounds to appreciate the areas in leisure.
